One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is “what happens during a session?”. The answer is that every single session is different. Kinesiology is tailored to you as it is body directed, meaning that your body can guide us in many ways to find the source of issues that may be present. Backing this form-fitting approach is a basic structure that all of our sessions follow.
During an initial session, we document in-depth your medical history and symptom evaluation to uncover your diagnosis in terms of Chinese Medicine. We also often use tongue analysis and pulse analysis which are commonly used in Chinese Medicine to understand where imbalances may lie and how to best target and treat your symptoms.
After we assess the physical body we discuss your stress levels and any emotional distress that you may be experiencing, we develop a goal that we want to work on during the session to help support you in overcoming any barriers to feeling at ease. Perhaps it is putting yourself first, accepting yourself as you are, trusting yourself or just connecting back to yourself – every goal is unique. We also use outcome specific goals for your physical symptoms or condition as a goal to focus our session on.
Once we have determined our focus for both the physical body as well as the emotional and mental bodies, it is time to get you onto the table. This is notably different from a massage or going to the physio. There no need to undress, simply lie down on your back and get comfortable on the table.
This is where the main tool of Kinesiology begins to be used – muscle monitoring. During our session muscle monitoring is used which is a process that involves reading the changes in muscle tension when stress is present.
This physical feedback process allows information to be accessed directly from the body, facilitating neurological connections between the physical body and the nervous system.
We use muscle monitoring to communicate with the body, and the body directs us to the source of imbalance by guiding us to explore and gain further understanding of why these issues are presenting for you in the first place. We also use muscle monitoring to direct us to how we can best bring your body back to balance and release these stressors and blockages to your energy flow.
During the session we use a combination of complementary therapies. We are trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupressure, Counselling, Body Psychology, Neurological and Brain Function Rebalancing, Nutrition, Energetic Medicine, Mindfulness Meditation, Flower Essences, Sound Healing, and many others. We use your body to determine what mix is best for you at the time.
Once we find and explore the source the issues or imbalances using those tools, it is time for the “Balance” portion of the session. This is where we bring together everything that we have uncovered during the session and use specific acupressure points to unblock energy flow to bring the body back into balance.
This portion of the session goes for 20-30 minutes and is designed to bring you into total relaxation to allow the stimulation of the body’s natural healing process. I guide you through meditation to allow you to reconnect to your body whilst I hold the acupoints.
The purpose of the meditation is to help you achieve a deeper state of relaxation where the brain produces Theta waves. Theta waves have been scientifically proven on both the body and mind to promote rejuvenation, growth, and healing. This is called the healing state.
After the balance has been completed, we then reassess and see if there is anything the body would like you to do as “homework” to assist the healing process and support personal growth between sessions. This could be the addition of mindfulness at home, specific types of exercise, additions of certain nutrients, changes in routines etc.
It is recommended that after your initial session you come back in 2-3 weeks for another session to check in and see how you have adjusted to any changes and assess where improvements have been made and find any areas that need further focus.
After a session most people will report they feel completely relaxed, clear minded and at ease as their stress and anxiety has been minimized. Sometimes you can feel a little bit sleepy afterwards as your body has finally had the chance to relax, or sometimes totally energized and recharged!
